Does My Dog Have a Broken Leg or a Sprain

It is extremely stressful when you suspect that your dog may have broken or sprained a leg. Of course, the yelping and howls of pain can break your heart as a pet owner. If your dog is able to still walk or run even if with a limp, then they probably just have a sprain and he or she will heal just fine. Just keep an eye on it, swelling is to be expected but if the symptoms get worse I would take him or her to the vet. You still can call the vet if you suspect a sprain, they will tell you over the phone what to do for your specific breed of dog. The symptoms of a broken leg are not being able to walk on it, or is he/she does they will fall down. You can also usually see the bone that is broke, even if it's not sticking out of the skin you can usually tell by the condition of the leg. If you are with your dog when it happens you will usually hear the popping of the bone breaking.

Cost for the Vet to Fix a Broken Dog Leg

When you take your dog to the vet they will examine the condition of the leg and determine how severe it is. Generally, you can expected to spend anywhere between a couple hundred dollars to $1,000 dollars. They will have to take an X-ray to be able to know exactly how bad the leg is broken and that alone is around $200, that doesn't include the charge for the vet examination and anything else they may do for your dog.

What a Vet Uses to Determine Cost of Fixing a Broken Leg

There are several different things that contribute to the cost of getting your dogs broken leg fixed. Some of which include the age of your dog, Whether it is the back or the front leg that is injured. Other factors are the type of break as well as the angle of the break, and whether or not there is any bone exposed.

The Three Options a Vet Will do to a Dogs Broken Leg

There are a few different things that a vet will do, most of the time they put a cast on the leg to hold it into place and heal the same as healing a human broken leg. The other option is surgery, this is only done when a leg is severely mangled and in cases where the bone is not able to be repaired and the leg restored. The final option is amputation, in most cases this is an option when there are health risks that would be to stressful on the dogto put him/her under anesthesia.
